THE FEDERAL BANK.
London, February 16. Lord Ardilaun, a depositor to the extent of £10,000, has applied for the compulsory winding up of the Federal Bank in England. The case will be heard on Monday. IRISH AFFAIRS. 1 The Dublin Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal by Mr John Morley, Chief Secretary for Ireland, against the decision respecting his refusal to allow the police to protect sheriffs. INTERFERENCE WITH TRADE. The Hon. A. J. Mundella, President of the Board of Trade, replying to a deputation consisting of two hundred members of the House of Commons, said that if the railway companies did not agree to a reduction in rates before Easter, legislation would be introduced to compel them to do so. He admitted that the farmers were the worst sufferer**. A CURIOUS CASE. A curious case is being investigated. A woman bought a child, and imputed its parentage to a gentleman named Coxon, who married her. Subsequently he was killed in the hunting field. The real mother having revealed the sale of the child, Coxon's family bought an action against his widow to recover the fortune left to the child by Coxon. A verdict was returned in favor of the family. THE DRINK BILL. The amount expended in alcohol in Great Britain last year amounted to £140,000,000. PENNY POST. The Chancellor of the Exchequer favors an Imperial penny post.
