THE FLOODS IN AUSTRALIA.
[per press association.] Sydney, February 14. Boats are plying in the streets in Grafton, rescuing the residents, many of whom have sought shelter in the public buildings, The water is now receding. It is believed half a million bushels of maize have been destroyed. Brisbane. February 14. A heavy flood has been experienced in Toowoomba. The streets are flooded and many shops inundated. The second flood is rapidly subsiding. (Received February 15, noon.) Lokdoh, February 14. Sir J, F. Garrick, Agent-General for Queensland, has published a teleg. am from the P> emier of the colony that it is not necessary to appeal to the public, though private assistance in aid of the sufferers by the floods would be gratefully received. " The Times " states that the continued increase of colonial bills is not regarded with favor in the city, and it is thought that Queensland will ask a new loan with Imperial guarantee, on account of the floods. It hopes that despite the Agent-General's letter a Mansion House fund will be started. (Receiv3tt February 15, 12.30 p.m.) Brisbane, Febiuary 15. Three bodies —two men and one woman —have been recovered from the } river, , Auckland, February 14. A public meeting, convel ed by the , Mayor, was held to-day to raise a tonal ! fund for the relief of the sufferers by the Queensland floods. The sum of £280 was collected in the room. A committee was appointed to canvass for subscriptions. * It was decided, at the suggest*, n of Sir George Grey, to send the money direct to the Premier of Queensland, instead of through the New Zealand Govern- j ment as was at first resolved by the meeting. It was also decided, on !he motion of Mr J. M. fShera, to ask the Government of New Zealand to send a sum out of the colonial revenue in aid of the sufferers, if a majority of the House agreed to such a course. Welungton, February 14. The Premier has received the following from the manager of the Union Company: —" We have not a steamer loading for Brisbane direct, bu», we will, however, be glad to lake one hundred tons of gifts of supplies by the Hauroto to Sydney, free of freight, and we have no doubt that similar favorable arrangements can be made with the companies on the other side, as regards freights from Sydney to Brisbane. The Hauroto loads at Oamaru to-morrow, Tiraaru on Thursday, and Lyttelton on Monday. Dunebin, February 14. Mr Hallenatein heads the Queensland relief fund with a donation ot £50, The Dunedin Cycling Club will hold a sports meeting on March 11 in aid of the Queensland relief fund.
