London, February 9 Mr Justice Sterling has decided that the "missing word" lottery is illegal.

SIR SAUL SAMUEL ON BORROWING.

The Mercers Company tendered a banquet to the Agents-General of the Australasian colonies. In proposing one of the toasts, Sir Saul Samuel, Agent-General for New South Wales, defended the colonies from the unjust and unwarranted attacks of anonymous scribblers. He said that although caution was necessary in regard to future borrowing, the colonies were well able to bear the burden they had undertaken. The two hundred millions which had been spent had benefited the colonies and the Mother Country alike. The money had settled millions of people iv Australia, and had built twelve thousand miles of railways.

THE FEDERAL BANK.

In response to a circular which was issued to depositors, the Federal Bank has received the first batch of replies representing £120,000, and assenting to th<* voluntary liquidation of the institution, with Mr Justice Butt as liquidator. This, however, is contingent on the bank in Melbourne going in4o liquidation, as. a small creditor has lodged a petition for the compu'sory winding up of the affairs of the bank.

WALSALL ELECTION.

The Wai sail election resulted in the return of Sir Arthur Hayter, the Liberal candidate, who polled 5235, as against 5156 received by his opponent, Mr C. S. Ritchie, who stood in the Tory interest.

FRAUDULENT BANKRUPTCY.

Two brothers blamed Barker, who carried on a banking business in Mark Lane, have been arrested for fraudulent bankruptcy. The amount involved in the frauds is half a million sterling.
