Mr Vecht, a victualling contractor of Chicago and London, has resolved to establish a number of pig butcheries in this colony for the supply of the Australian squadron with pork. One of these factories is to be established in Taranaki and another in the Auckland province. Mr Vecht ia at present in the south, looking for convenient bites for similar factories in Jtago, Canterbury, and Southland. He states that this new industry of pork-raising might be made very profitable in New Zealand. He is prepared to contract for grain-fed pork, but he wants a larger pig fed upon the roots found on the ranges, not necessarily fat but in condition. He would give the market price for grain-fed pork ("ay 31 to 4d per Hi), but for the larger pork 2£iJ for as much as could be supplied. ■ ' Mr Thomas Miclean, of the firm of Job© Ure and Sons, Regent Mills, Glasgow, v in New Zealand at the present time. Interviewed at Oamaru by a representative of the " Mail/ he said that his firm, which cutupan average of 40,000 bushels daily, mostly used American wheat, which was shipped direct to them. Ihe New Zealand was undoubtedly preferable if ia good condition. Provided the price were kept low enough, a' direct market might bo opened tip at Glasgow on a large scale, for a great deal of wheat is used there. About 28a to 325, & quarter would be a fair average price, but of course this would be gi>v.irneiteatirely by circumstances and the condition of the American market. When New Zealand wheat could be got, they preferred it. It was a good wheat, and generally hard and dry, which suited their roller milling. The weather was fine, rather too fine in iapfc, as, owing to the iuten.se heat, it was nqt considered advisable to Have any races until after tea, when the sun waa not so powerful. The children from both St, Stephen's aud the Hampstead schools mustered at St, Stephen's Church, to the number, with parents and friends, of about three hundred, and after a short service the whole marched in procession to the Domain. Here, as has been said, the heat prevented much being done in the way of races until after tea, and only such sports as did not require very violent exercise, and could be carried on as much aa possible in the shade of the trees, were iudulged in At five o'clock the tea b,ell rang, and the children took their sgats on the terrace to fhe right of the pavilion.
