« ■ Sydney, February 11. Government is investigating the financial soundness of the friendly societies, many of which have been discovered to be virtually insolvent. Registration will be refused to new societies whose rate of subscription does not warrant the benefits promised. Government will shortly legislate on the matter.
THE BUSH FIRES.
Melbourne, February 11. The chief sufferers by the disastrous bush and grass. fires that have been raging this week are struggling orchardists, who have lost the savings of a life time. It is a gloomy outlook for farmers whose winter feed has been destroyed. (Received February.ll,l2.ls p.m.)

Hobart, February 11, The Treasurer has communicated with the New Zealand Government request that a Union Company's steamer be ordered to call at fcorflHowe and Seal Islands to ascertain whether *ny trace of the missing vessel May Newton can beiound there.
