Wellington, February 7. The Inspector of Mines has forwarded to Lhe Minister a full report upon the auriferous reefs at Wilson's River, Preservation Inlet, and on the works in progress there. He says :~"The river bed is all being worked from about a mile and a hatf below the preseiit toad line up to wliere the reel croups the river, and gome are Voikiiigaboxe the iine of riej: ; but it la wnjy jr t yery dry weather that 1 any workings can be eatrte4 ftn ; AJI the men state that they make very good wages when they can work, but sometimes they can only work six days a month ; therefore very few have averaged £3 a week since they commenced, and some have made only tucker. With regard to tin prospects of the locality developing into a large reefing district, there 13 nothing done at the present time to show whether anything will bo got beyond the prospector's claim. No stone is visible where gold can be seen in any flf the other claims, but there has been no work dope to test the reef. The lode exposed pn (the spuj:h 'ajide ©f the river is different frouj that on the north side. The best stone on the south Bide is near the surface, and one foot on tlje wall side Of the lode, yhereas on the north side the rich band qf stone is on the hangjng waU I aide, and should this band ran fop some distance it will yield a large quantity of gold.
