Paimerston Nokth. February 3. Mr Frank A, Orbeli, commission agent, abouo fifty-five years eld, shot himself through the heart just after three o'clock this afternoon, with a gun loaded with shot, and expired about five minutes afterwards. Deceased was well known in Wellington, Wairarapa, and Otago. He leaves a large, family, most of them grown up, Weixington, February 3. Afc a meeting of the Rugby Union this afternoon, letters were lead from the Queensland and New South Wales Unions, expressing pleasure at New Zealand sending a team over for the coming season. The Unions guaranteed the whele expenses of the tour, and suggested matches in July at Sydney, Brisbane, Bathurst, and Newcastle, should be played. It was resolved that the team leave at the end of June, to return at the c ad of July, play in Sydney on July 1 and 2, and in Brisbane on July 8 and 1?, should the dates suit the Australian Uniom. Letters were also received from the A mericari fflptball authorities, favoring a proposal to play there in 18&4 en route to England, »nd promising hearty co-operation. It is considered probable the team for Australia will be sent via Auckland and play a match there prior to leaving. At the Resident Magistrates Court to day, John Armstrong waa sued for arrears, amounting to £9410 d, for the support of his son who had been, an ltimate of the'industrial school for sonae years. Defendant said that the boy had been taken away when five years of age, *nd kept there for Len years, and his education had b^en so much neglected that he was not able to read even the most simple words ; in fact he saw that the lad was now simply a fool. The boy ww produced, and Mr Graham, R.M., said that he was satisfied with the father's 9tfltem«nt. He expressed surprise at the
condition of things, and under the circumstances felt justified in remitting the i whole of the arrears, and would call the Minister's attention to the matter. IS'elsox, February 3. A miner, named A.i;dr«w .Klstrom, a native of Norway, has been killed near CollingwGod by fulling over a cliff upwards, of 50 feet high.. His body was found this morning, but the accident evidently occurred a week ago, A very narrow escape was experienced by two men at one of the hotels. They came from the West Co*st for the carnival and the house being tull they were accommodated in a sitting room where the gas was left burning. Beini? unaccustomed to gas, it appears they blew it out, and got to bed. In the early morning the landlord smelt an escape of gas, and traced it to their room, which he entered. He found one man frothing at the mouth, and sent immediately for a doctor, who states the man would have been dead in another ten minutes. The Hon. W. P. Reeves received a deputation from the Education Board today re the erection of a central school. He also visited the town schools in the afternoon with Mr Babens, the Mayor, and ethers. He visited St Mary's Orphanage, Stoke, and expressed himself well pleased with all he had seen.
