THE CRISIS IN HAWAII.
Washington, February 3. News has been received that Oleghorn, uncle of the Princess Kainalani, is hastening to San Francisco and Washington to urge on an American protectorate over the group with the Princess as Queen. If the United States refuses he will appeal to Great Britain. Mr L. A. Thurston, of Hawaii, the leading member of the committee of safety, advocates the appointment of an American governor, supported by troops ; also for an elective legislature. it is reported that President Harrison and Mr C. Foster, Secretary of the Treasury, have agreed upon the outline of a treaty granting a protectorate to the United States. Mi Edward Grey declares that the lives and property of British subjects wou'd be safe under American protection. The British authorities have made no protest to the Government of the United States. Senator Chandler's motion for the admission of Hawaii among the United States has been referred to the Foreign Relations Committee. Ottawa, February 2. Sir J. Thomson, Premier of Canada, is exchanging telegrams with the Imperial Government, urging the importance of Hawaii in connection with the cable to Australia. He has been assured that the British Government are on the alert.
