He has demanded that Portugal should instruct her officers to maintain the status quo on the : Zambesi. Portugal ie willing to comply, provided similar ingtructions are given to English officers. The opinion obtains in diplomatic circles here that the Portuguese Government will eventually disavow the action j of Major Pinto in the Zambesi, and seek to obtain a convention of the European Powers to determine the question of Portuguese rights in that region, if unable to effect a satisfactory settlement with England.
