A very large eel was taken out of the Ashburton Kiver yesterday by Messrs O. and G. Moss while out angling. The fish was lying in the main stream, and was taken with the gaff. It scaled over 211b, and was 5 feet long and 17 inob.es in oircumferenoe. These large eelß seem to be pretty plentiful in the river just now.
The New South Wales Government has approved ol the suggestion ot the Stoak authorities that Dr Wilkinson, of Sydney, an expert in bacteriology, who is proceeding to England, be requested to make inquiries as to the alleged discovery of the true miorobe of pleuro-pneumonia, and also to visit M. Pasteur and arrange with him for supplies of anthrax vacoine.
At Ashton-under*Lyne Polioe Court, a well built man named David Fisher, a Welshman, who has been travelling round the country exhibiting himself as the Tattooed King, was charged with deßerting from Her Majesty's ship Northumberland in 1882/ The man is tattooed from head to foot with all kinds of fanoiful designs. He was remanded, and was taken to Strangeways prison to await the arrival of an escort.

The two figures to the right will tell you her age and the remainder the month of her birth. For example, tne amount is 822 —she is twenty two years old, and was born in the eighth month, August.
Two draught horses, the property of Mrs D, Clark, Green Hill, Kyneton, says the " Observer " are in such a disabled condition that it is believed that it wjll be neoessary to kill them. One is a draught stallion and the other a draught gelding. A few nights ago the stallion broke into the paddock where the gelding was running, and forthwith a pitched battle ensued, with the meet serious oonsequenoes in the oase of each animal. Next morning the horsese were discovered in a most peculiar position. The gelding was standing with one of the iron hoofs of the entire embedded in its abdomen. The stallion was standing on three legs, but was unable to move owing to one of his shoulders hiving been dislocated.

A remarkable instanoe of surgical progress which ooourred in the praotioe of Professor Yon Bergmann, of Berlin, is mentioned by the London correspondent of the " Man. ohester Guardian." The Professor had two patients who were simultaneously brought to him for operations, one requiring amputation of the thigh at the hip joint, the other needing a portion of the bumerus removed on account of the bone being extensively diseased The first operation to be done was the ampui tation, and immediately afterwards the 'surgeon proceeded to excise (be diseased portion of the bumerus. The result of this latter procedure was neoossarily to make a gap in the bone; but a piece of the thigh bone was taken from the limb which had just been amputated and fixed on the gap, by which the continuity of the humerua was completely restored. Perfeot union took place, and the patient reoovered with a useful arm.

A ourioua railway accident is reported from Booheforte. The express for Paris waß, by a pointsman's mistake, shunted on to a branch line, along which it prooeeded some distanoe, when the engine-driver, discovering the mistake, baoked his train to regain the main line, and ran into a local train proceeding in a contrary direoeion. Eight oarriages were destroyed and some ten passengers were injured, but there was no loss of life.
A largely attended meeting of Court Ash. button, No 6729, A.0.F., was held laßt even* ibg for the purpose of the eleotion of officers. Bro W. H. Paget was eleoted to the offioe of 0.X., and Bro J. B. Hillgrove as S.GJt., the other offices were also filled satisfactorily. A vota of thanks was unanimously passed to the retiring officers, and responded to by P.C.R,, Bro Banger, who installed the new offioera in their respective chairs. The dootor's and secretary's accounts were passed for payment, the Court closing in the usual way at 10.30 p.m.
The regular weekly session of the Star of the East Lodge, 1.0. G.T., was held in the Templar Hall last evening, Bro T. Welch presiding. One candidate was proposed. It was decided to form a library in connection with the Lodge. The business having been got through, the Lodge went into harmony, when songs were sang by Bros Weloh and Pearson, a duet was given by Sisters Bennett and Piokford, a recitation by aister Hughes, and readiegs by Bros Andrews and Edwards. A pleasant evening was spent and the Lodge was dosed in form due by Bro T. Weloh at 9.40,
The orioket match North versus South of Ashburton river was not played yesterday owing to the small attendance of players ohosen to represent each side, but a aoratch matoh of one innings a Bide was played, sides being ohosen by T. Sawle and L. F. Andrewes, resutling in a victory for the latter by 58 runs. The highest soorera were for the winners, G. W. Andrews 31,0. A. I. Mackay 29 not out, L. F. Andrewes 27, and Jenkins 10, and for the losers T. Sawle 12, and W. Davis 10. G. W. Andrewes, O. E. Davis, Dixon, and W. Eidd bowled wal£for their respective sides.
