ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
The ordinary fortnightly meeting was held last night. Present—The Mayor and Councillors Williamson, H. Friedlander, Keir, Bird, Brooke, Macfarlane, Scaly, Outhbertson mayoe's statement. -■ „ The Mayor said that the debit balance at ; the Bank was £1269 os 4d. The amounti I which had been received since last meeting wore ;—Battis, £1 7a j rents of reserves, £29; earth sold, 8a 6d; Library acpount, 5b ; Caledonian Booiety'e contribution towards Domain £16. Total, £47 Oa 6d. COBRISI'ONDENOE. Letters were read (1) From the Seoretary of the Aahbarton Cycling Olub withdrawing the letter which the Council declined to reoeive at the last meeting, and apologising for its tone. Owing to the unfinished state of the track the Olub could not hold its meeting, and had decided not to make any payment. —In reply to a question the Engineer Baid that he wast collecting ashes to finish the track.—Or Friedlander moved that the Olerk apply to the Seoretary of the Associated Clubs, at whose request the track was in the first instance formed, for payment of the Bioyole Club's subsidy of £6 ss.—Or Williamson seconded the motion. The Council had been misled by the Club, and it was unfortunate that a guarantee or the money had not been obtained before the work was commenced.—Or Eeir agreed with Or Williamson but thought that the Council should finish the track before making the demand. — The Engineer said that the track could not be finished for a twelvemonth, though it was at present good enough for use.—The Mayor said that the Bioyole Club were people who did not know what they wanted. . He had taken Mr Maltby on to the track, and that gentleman, who it would be admitted knew something about it, aaid that the traok was better than that in Dunedin, and would when finished be the best in the colony.—Or Macfarlane defended the action of the Bioyole Club. The traok was unfit for riding, and the Bioyole Olub had on two oooasions been put to expense thereby, having to postpone their meeting. They were willing to pay their contribution when the traok was completed.— After disoussion Or Friedlander's motion was put to* the meeting and carried, Or Macfarlane dissenting. — (2) From the police applying for reward promised by Council for conviction of owners of unregistered dogs.— It was decided to pay the amount.—(3) From Mr J. Grigg, Longbeaoh, complaining of ohargea made by poundkeeper, and stating that abusive and threatening language wa3 used to his manager, who remonstrated.— The Foundkeeper had been notified to attend, but was not present, and consequently the Council, after hearing Mr Staadisb, deferred consideration.—(4) The Fire Brigade applied for permission to attend the banquet in Dunedin, Arrange' mentß had' been m«d«-«ith-ax-I?irßin6n to turn out in oase of need .'-Permission was granted to the Brigade and also to the Engineer.—(s) From the Caledonian Sooiety expressing their satisfaction with the state of the Domain on the day of their sports.— Letter acknowledged.
ENGINEEHS 1 REPORT, The Engineers reported as follows :— Jubilee Town Clook : The Works Committee at a meeting held on the 3rd inst. resolved to recommend that the design for the addition to the Library room, adopted by the Council and approved by the Jubilee. Committee be carried out and that the tender of Mr J. L, Brown at £17710s be aaoepted. Or Bird, the chairman of tbe Works Committee, proposed the adoption of the report, wbiob wae seoonded by Or Scaly. Cr Williamson thought the funds of the Council were not in position to stand the outlay. -There was plenty more important work requiring to be done. The Mayor ooneidered the Counoil were pledged, having taken the olook, to find a place for its reoeption. Cr Friedlander was sorry to have to oppose the motion, but the Council could not afford the expenditure. He moved ag an amendment that the matter be referred baok to the Committee, wb,en possibly , some soheme r^ight be devised,
Or Keir seconded k the amendment which was carried, THE DOMAIN. The Domain Committee made the following recommendations: — (1) Swimming Baths: That the hours during which the swimming baths be open to the publio ehould be before 9 a.m. in the morning and after 6 p.m. in the evening.—(2) That the posts on running track, the pavilion and the gates at Sporte Ground be painted, and that the Engineer obtain prices for the same.—(3) That the path leading through the Domain to AUenton be oloaed at onoe. : MISOE]^LANKOD3. i A quantity of miaoellaneous business was tranaaoted, and the Counoil adjourned.
