(" Oamaro Mali," Jan. 2 )
Tbe express which reached Oamaru at five o'clock last evening brought inso town the remains ot a man who htd clearly been killed by the tr»ln near Danosn's siding, near Pakeurl, The head was completely severed from the trunk, and was so mutilated as to render the features utterly unreoognlsable. No information oan be obtained which throws any light upon cither the Identity of the man or Ihe olroatnstsnces under which he met hie death, Tho only thing that seems to be clear Is that the unfortunate man was run over and decapitated by the express train going north, for the body was found shortly afterwards by tboee on the express from the north. How the man came on to the line cannot ba more than oonj aotured. Oau theory Is th*t he fell off one of tbe oarrlnges near the end of the train, aod wm run over, and another Is that be was Intoxicated and bad fallen asleep with his head tcrots the rail, while some hold tbe opinion that It was a case of suicide, aud ihat tho man had deliberately placed himself In a position to meet certain and lastauts.aeons death. Any one of these the Ties may be oerreot, bat It Is possible that ihe faota of tho oise may never be knows. The body hai been viewed by several parsons, bat no Idea has yet been formed is to ;ha identity of the deceased, nor was anything found about the body that would give n clue that might lead to tha olearlng np of the mystery. The only thing found In the pockets of the deceased were a Is ad kerchief or two, a pals of ap c aoles, and one or two otDßr trifles, bet the pook^tßi contained no money nor •nj florap of writing of any kind. A constable wi.s de<patohed to Pakeurl lost evening to nuke Inquiries, but will not return until soma time to-day. The body lies at tbe Northern Hotel awahlog the necessary coroner's Icqaest.
La f<er news says that tbe name of the deceased has been found to ba Thomas .Powell. A verd'ot of aosidanlal death was return^ at the Inquest
