The OaUdonlan games of yesterday, the first d»y of the gathering, ware held In cold, showery weather. There were 2600 persons present, md the games generally were well contested. New Year's ere paned off vety quietly.
The fortieth annual regatta at«Lyttelton yesterday had to be postponed owing to the inclemency of the weather. Only 1 the firßt and second class yacht races were rot off, and a couple.of rowing events. The Pdßtime won the first-class yachtrace, with Little Wonder second. They were the only boate which as the strong southwest wiod and heavy sea proved too ranch for tie others. The Neva and the Crest were the only two which finished in the race for second daw yrchts, acd tie Neva got home first. In the rowing races Kaiapoi won the Senior Pairs, with Lytteltou ■econd; and in the Maiden Sculls Lyttelton won with Kaiapoi second. Tt is to be that the weather tamed out unfavorably, for the committee had arranged for what looked lik-) ooe of the most successful regattas ever held. The baUnca of the raoes will be concluded at an early date, probably Saturday. '
