THE NEW YEAR.

(b_ ihe editor.) Yet another year is added To the past, And the New Tear's fleeting moments Follow fast. Like the waves forever beating On the Btrand, Ebbing ever, flowing ever, To the land. Ere we catch the winge. moment, It is o'er ; And with lightning speed evanished, Evermore. Years roll on, and joys and sorrows Have their day, Then — as mist before tbe Bunshiue— - . Fade away. Years roll on-— the sunlight mingles With the gloom, Ev'ry moment oasts its shuttle Through the loom. Kow a strand of beauty brightens AU the weft. Now the sombre wet of lightness Is bereft. Thus our destinies are woven, Day by day ; Joy and sorrow, light and shadow, Mingled aye. Hope, despair, suooasa and failure, Peaoe and strife, Hatred, love, revenge, and mercy, Death and life, Yeara roll on— and lo I another Year begun, What for ua shall be ita story When 'tis done ? « Love triumphant, Faith victorious" Shall it t^ll? Shall it write the record glorious " All ia well"? Or shall sin upon its pages Darkness oast And shall " lohabod" ba written At the last? These the thoughts the years departed Join to teach ; This the question of the New Year Unto eaoh. Let us then essay to answer As we should Seeking ever, striving ever For the good; So shall eaoh New Year ba better Than the past So Bhall eaoh New Year be welcome, Till the fast.
