ENGLAND AND PORTUGAL.
A SQUADRON ORDERED TO GIBRALTAR. [Pbb Pkess Association.] New Yobk, December 27. The " New York Herald" states that four British ironclads have been ordered from Malta to Lisbon, London, Dedembet 28 and 30 It is reported here that an American squadron has been ordered to Lisbon to enforce Mr Murdo's claims with reference to Delagoa Bay and the goldfields railway. Reports received from the Zambesi Country state that Makalolo residents have been pacified, and Major Pinto, reporting from Mozambique, asserts that the British residents there were thankful for his protection, The Marquis of Salisbury is opposed to arbitration, and Portugal also does not desire it, * The Marquis of Salisbury is anxious to avoid any irritation, or the despatch of a fjeet to Lisbon, but orders that a powerful squadron shall rendezvous at Gibraltar m order to be ready lor any emergency. J. G. Blame. the American Secretary of State, has publicly denied that America is co-operating with England m forcing Portugal's hand. In reply to an address from Oporto, Seohor Gomes, Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that he is hqpeftil of an amicable settlement of the dispute between England an d Portugal.
