THE LICENSING DISPUTE.

TO THE EDITOB, Sir,— Will you kindly insert the enclosed letter sent to me by Mr Robert Alcorn. / s some of the public may not understand to what Mr Alcorn refers I may be permitted to explain, that, unfortunate circumstances compelled me a shore time ago to hold a private meeting of my creditors, by which I am not aware that my public -position is m any way affected. Hook upon Mr Alcorn's letter as a threatening production with the evident intention of preventing the free exercise on -my part of my right to do what I may consider advisable and proper m the future. I shall therefore leave the public <o form their own conclusions m judging Mr Alcorn's action m this matter. So far as I am concerned the threat is thrown away«— Yours etc., John G. kbstell.

24th Deoember, 1889. Mr J.Q. Restik,, Chairman Licensing Committee, Ashbnrton. Sir,— l see by the report of the Boroagh Coanoil's meeting that the Gounoil have given leave for the Bioyole Club to have liquor m the Domain. I presume yon signed the permit to the Caledonian Soaiety without thinking you were making yourself liable to a penalty of £50. I was asked to join m enforcing it, but thought you did it unwittingly and therefore deolined. Ton must not expeat the same lenienoy shown you if you repeat the offence. Yours faithfully, BOBEBT AIiCOBN.'
