He estimateß the total number as more than nine millions, of whom (even millions are lo the United States, forming about a ninth of tha whole population. They are collected mainly m the States of New York and Pensylv*nl» ; but they occupy largely the ports for the trans-atlant c traffic— New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Charleston. In St Louie there are 39,000 Germans, In Chicago they represent about a third of the population, m New Orleans there are about 15,000, who maintain the trade with Bremen ; anu la San Franolsco thero are 13,000.
