He estimateß the total number as more than nine millions, of whom (even millions are lo the United States, forming about a ninth of tha whole population. They are collected mainly m the States of New York and Pensylv*nl» ; but they occupy largely the ports for the trans-atlant c traffic— New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Charleston. In St Louie there are 39,000 Germans, In Chicago they represent about a third of the population, m New Orleans there are about 15,000, who maintain the trade with Bremen ; anu la San Franolsco thero are 13,000. In Mexico there are from 5000 to 8000 es - toblished mainly m the oity of Mexico at, Oollna and Vera Orcz. Theie are German colonies m Havana, Jamaloa, Oman^c, <»nd Porto Eioo. In Haytl they are en g&ged In the cultivation and trade m coffae. In 1887 a Hamburg line of steamers took a third of the coffee exported from Port-au-Prince, more than half of tbat from Cipe Haytiea, and two-thirds of that from Gonaivies. Twenty years ago there were 32,000 French and 5000 Germans m the Argentine Republic. To-day there are 153 000 French and 54,000 Germans. In 1873 German trade with that state amounted to 15,000,000fr— -It is now 60 millions.
