ASHBURTON AT THE EXHIBITION
("Otago Dally Times.") The exhibits of thla oonrt are almost purely agrlonltural. Nothing has been epeoiaily prepared for exhibition, with the uoeptlon of some photographs and plaques. The grain has been oletnad to the best of the exhibitors' ability, but It la ahowa la baahel samples of last year's orop as they W6ie taken fro ax the field. The oharao'er of the ooart Is Indicated at Ita entrance by a display of flax (some of whtoh 1b 10ft high from the root to the tip)i and of grain and oats In e»r. There is a large and comprehensive display of grain. Mr D. Thomas exhibits 27 samples of various grains grown In tho Aahburton ooanty. fhe wheat biß been gathered from the extreme parts of the oonntf, some from the neighborhood of Mathven, o^hen from the fertile lands of the Ashburton Forks, and Wakanoi and Longbeach districts, and others from the low lands m the seaward part of the oOQDty, Atnongat other exhibits may be speoiaily mentioned exoeilent apeolmens of white straw, Tuscan, rye, and golden tares, the latter being samples of wheat, of which a Urge qaantlty was grown by Mr John GHgg last year, and sold In the Melbourne market. A sample of elephant peas of Immense sfsa li also shown, and a very nloe samples of ryegrass. Anq&er c«*«e of grain samples is exhibited by^BUjlJKclJ&iander Bros. Inoloded m thfls oolleotlon. is some white straw Taecan, which is of excellent quality, and a sample of wheat that was grown by Mr E, Yateß, at Grove farm, Tinwa'd. Some of the wheat was sown about the 14th of November 1888* waa reaped m the first week of February 1889, and yielded 71 bushels an acre. Messrs Frledlacder Eros', case also includes samples of wool grown m tha Aehburton county, and scoured by Mr o>ruaJEfomerßham, of Ashburton, and a sample of hematite iron ore, from the Mount Somers hills. From the Canterbury Boiler Mills, ABhburton, an interesting exhibit has been forwarded Bbowing the different artioleß that are reoeived Into and seat oat of that mill, a here is a sample of dirty milling wheat, surrounded by samples of the soreenings, rubbish, and obaff taken out of the wheat by the aspirator j samples of the dnet snd the germ and duet extracted by the brush machine, and also pieces of binding wire and of similar material, extracted by magoets. The wheat is shown m the firat, second, tbicd, fourth, and fifth breaks that it undergoes m goinz through the rollers, and there are a'.eo exh bits of bran, pollard, and finally of the wellknown Oantebury roller flour. In the B4me case aro exhibited samples of germina, purified semolina, and some exoeilent clean samples of varieties of miiling wheat. In Mr Q. Jameson's exhibit the most noticeable artioles are oomo samples of golden dr jp wheat, whi'e etraw Tuaoan • alao black, dun, Canadian, and Danish oats, aod some samples of unwashed ranrlno wool from some of the principal flooka m the county. Another painting depicts the realdenoa of Mr J Ooobrano,« wellknowo Elgin farmer ; and there are photographs of grain stares In Ahburton and of other •Johlteotnral features of the oounty. Mrs Home;aham shows two nloely executed ' water olor paintings, and neas them Is a photograph of the manager of the Longmora estate, draping whiah Is a tartan oliaTl, manufactured m tho Moaglel Woollen Oompony'fl Ashborton mills, the only exhibit from these miiJs that Is made. An exhibit of aohool work at ABhburton conßlats of four pictures of Berlin wool work, and Mrs Curtis, of Aahburton, shows, a mirror bracket whioh has a lea'her work frame, the leather for whioh is made out of sheepskin?. On the wall of the bay Is a large map of the lower or agricultural part of the Aahbnrton county, showing the various reaeivea, plantations, village settlements, and water raaes Ash button was the first ooanty to adopt the Irrigation system, and on this map 870 miles of water races are shown, whioh" sre now actually sup? plied with water, and It Is proposed to add another 50 miles of waler r»oa iv the Bukaia ayaten?. Fxbiblta of beer and otcu' brewed from malt and hops only, are made by the Ashbnrton Brewery Company, by whom the m*lt waa grows. The Lion Brewery Company a'so have an exhibifc pf alf »nd at out. The mineral .TeaHh'of the ocunly U illußtrated by a block of Mount Somers coal, weighing upwards of a ton, of which there is aald to be an lofxbanstible supp'y In the hills, j and by I'meßtone with l.me barut therefrom at Boston's lime kilns. There f.re also drain tiles from Mr John GMgg'e works »t where during the last two jeara upwards oi o5 sollea of draining has been dons with thsaa tiles. Th'.s Lougbeaoh eat ice a few ye vi ago was an impenetrable sw«mD ; but lußt year it oarrled opwards of 700 acres of grain orop, besides a very large quftntl.'y of sheep, Mr Gr'gg being, as Is well-known, the largest exporter of frepm meat m JSew Z^land. Along with tbfs 1. 1 >er exhibit are shown two gigantic fossil oysters whioh weio found m the Umesloue 53 miles from tho ten, »nd also a couple of Maori weopons which were found m oaves m the limestone rooks. Other lndoßtriea are shown m exhibits of honey from M' W* Hart's Winohmoro apiary, and of flax, Wtnohmore honey mtiat be pretty well kuowa In Dunedin, as about six tons of It have been disposed of here during the laat year. The exhibit ia preolaely the same honey as took first prfz < agalnßt ell comers at the Melbourne Exhibition, and In \he previous year similar honey oarrled off the first prlga at the Oolindeilea, beating exhibits from all parts of the world. Of fl tx a bale Is exhibited which was t*ken from the stores of Mossra Jepbaon and Moorp, Tlnwuld, from amongst an ordinary shipping Una. It has not snob, a white appearanoe as some of the fl>x wbloh fa m the exhlbltloo, but will be found to have en equal tensile strength and to be less brittle. Alongside this exhibit are shown a few hanks of dyed flar, such as ii used m the manufacture of mats. There is also an exhibit of a tub of salt butter which was made m the middle of September, and retains ita perfect flavor and good quality. Amongst the minor exhibits jhay be mentioned some samples of patent p ndlesticks made m Aehburton, a specimen of an almost forgotten art, "ampler work (which we miy mention is 50 years old), and en automatic camera front by which m o^e movement the c mera can be adjusted to landscape, wide angle and long focus.
