THE RECENT DISGRACEFUL PRIZE FIGHT
(VSR PBIBS ASSOCIATION;) London, Deoember 22 to 24. Slayin had the advantage of Smith throughout the fight, and he fought m the fairest and most plucky manner, driving Smith into his corner every round. The mob kicked and struck SlaviD, throughout ignoring his appeals for fair play. The referee declared that Slavin had not been allowed fair play, and possibly still will award the fight to him. The English sportsmen who were present at the fight expreßß themselves disgusted at the tactics indulged m by the supporters of Smith. Joe Thompson, the well-known Australian bookmaker, declined to be present at the fight, having been warned it was intended to mob Slayin. The referee was terrorised by the Smith creff. It is hoped he will deolare Slavin the victor. Smith was pulverised by the Australian. In referring to the assault on Slavin m the recent fight, the " Sportsman" considers it incredible that men who have a drop of Christian blood m their veins should support Smith and hip gang of ruffians, who were armed with knives and revolvers. Abrington, Smith's chief backer, towards the end of the fight wore the colors of the Australian as a protest against the violence. A testimonial is being prepared for presentation to Slavin for his win, and when he arrived opposite the "Sportsman" office he was cheered by thousands. The members of the Pelican Club m London have suspended Fleming, who holds the dual capacity of Smith's manager and mißter of ceremonies for the Pelican Club. The Club recognise Slavin as the champion of England, and will present him with a belt and a purse of sovereigns. Slavin, on his return to town, received an ovation at the hands of the members of the Stock Exchange, who subscribed a purse of 500 soys for him.
