We do not hold ourselves responjible for tht opinions expressed by our correspondents
to thes suitor, • Sib,—The Licensing Committee have found a champion In Mr Keir. lam not' BU'prUed, as at two of the meetings held by the Borough Council this gentleman so far tort all decorum, like "fanatics" generally do, aa t j tell the Oounoil '* that it did not matter what the Oounoil decided as regaids permitting the sale of intoxicating liquor m the Domain, the applicants would not be granted a license, Asa matter of fact, then, the question according to Mr Keir'a untimely dißoloaure had been settled by the Licensing Committee loDg before the petition reached the Council; before the Caledonian booiety had even applied for the Oonnali'c oonsent to be allowed to sell liquor. Seeing that the matter was thus prejudged by the Committee! will Mr Keir inform me why these arbitrary rulers mocked the public by holding an illegal meeting, (shamming to consider what their biassed minds had already decided on, and misleading the ratepayers by makiag publio what has been a foregone ooaolustan. This then Is the champion of what is -* right" acd " deoent.' r Ma* I be saved from enoh rulers, I am glad that Mr Keir admits that he also it a "fanatic" He think* that my railing at the Committee is only waste of time for what can ba done, he asks, —till the election day ? A good deal I ray o»n and will be done, as Mr Keir wM find out ere long, perhaps more than ho ib aware of Proba lp some other ratepayers and I have already done more than ho thinks. lam quite satisfied with the present atate of the Licensing Aot, I am nor thinking for one moment of challenging the verdict of the jury. I know the vdrdiot of that jury was biassed, illegal, Indecent, UDjost, It was a foregone conolnnion and that the verdict ot the ajnjorhy will eatod for naught. I am satisfied xoiih the verdict«/ tht minority,. I am contested, and bo *ro the Oalbdonlan Sooiety, with the signatures of the -two latlonal men on the Committee, that of tbe Chairman, Mr 11-.stoll, and Mr Thomas, to a conditional license In favor of ono Mr Henry Davis t whioh s»ld license Is alio duly endorsed by tha Sergeant of Police. In doing what some of my friends and myaelf did, I consider that I have done my duty aa a Councillor and ratepayer, and tbuo upheld th« honor of tho Boroogh Connoll whoae deoUlon the majority of the Licencing Oummlttee thougnt fit to ignore, bat ignomlnluualy failed. Yours, eto., Huao Fbiedlandbk.
