Wright, addressed to Mb Excellency tho Governor m Council, stating his objections to the proclamation being made of the w*ter races under Section 267 of « The Oonntios Act, 1886," as prsye'd for by the Council. This matter will require the attention of the Council. It ia to be regretted that the Council had not been informed that this petition had .been 'odged at- an earlier date: The Colonial Seoretary states that it was received at his office April 12th last. , ENGINEERS BBPORT, The Engineer's repot t wai read as follows : — Plains Water Supply: The contractor is making good progress with the work, of auxiliary water supply from Kakaia river at Actom Contract No 1 is almost complete, and No 2 is commenced. The manager of Aoton Estate (as per letter annexed) requests to be supplied with a nqmber of gates for the initial main and extension race. — I will thank you to say whether these or any of them is to be granted.— The settlers m lower Acton* m the vicinity of the Rakaia river road, are. about to apply for permission to oonstruob a race m that quarter leading from the main now m course of construction. Thiß would be of much, benefit to. all these settlera, but m order to ensure efficiency, the three fords, whioh would be neoeaaary for road crossings, should be made at their oost by the Oounoil. Pudding Hill stream was abnormally high laat week, causing considerable blockage m the dam and sluioes through accumulation of logs j and root 9, and a temporary deviation of the stream whioh has been restored, but no per* manent injury to the head work; —The intake of the auxiliary supply leading to Methven suffered m a Bimilar manner. — The base of the lower fall m Chapman's oreek at Drayton continues to scour considerably. This should be scoured with brushwood anda'few piles.— The supplies of the various parta of the dis-i triofc during the month have been satisfactory —The river at intake of the Wakanui oreek broke away reqontfy, but was quiokly put to rights, otheswise the Bupply to Wakanui Flat has been kept Bteadily going. Ashburton-Rangitata Water Supply : This, system is being fairly well maintained throughout, A few fordo require a little more olearanoe.The Mount Somers races are also. in fair order. Plantations'. Some of the oontraota for gorse outting and grubbing are already completed, and the remainder will be finished m a few days. The Anama Road Board requests the Odunoil to fenoa off the road line through plantation adjoining B.S. 24821, and to construot the ford for water raoe there. Those workjs are neoessary.
