ST. MARKS CHURCH RAKAIA.

GARDEN PARTY. On Thursday last a garden party, m aid of the debt of the above ohurob, was held m the parsonage grounds. The beautiful rain which fell somewhat interfered with the attendance, and only a moderate number paid toll at the gates. For coma considerable time the ladies 1 ol tbe distriat have been busy preparing, eto, ' and Mrs Eroadbenfc ia specially worthy of praise, and the stall for goods, fanoy and otherwise, was well stored with artioles both 1 useful and ornamental. This stall was taken oharge of by Mesdames Oollina and Blaok, Misses Hood (2), Roe, and Wilkinson, who , were always on the alort and never lost an opportunity of disposing of some item at satisfactory prioe to seller and purchaser. Miss Robinson and Miss Street took charge of a nicely got up Christmas tree, and the proceedß from saleß materially added to the Bum total. The bran pie was m oharge of Miss Oox and Misb S. Street, and contained many artioles of more than usual value. Had these two ladies reoeived a little more [attention and been put under shelter, no doubt they wou'd have been far more oomfortable and certainly drier. ' The re* freshment stall was loaded with everything that oould be desired, and reoeived very general support, as is generally the oase when the inner man requires attention. This was presided over by Mesdames Kemp, Buohanan, W. B. Dixon, Hughes, Allan, Gorringe and Py croft; A number of children danoed the may pole and other dances under the supervision of Mrs Buohanan, who, together with Miss Roe, took a deal of pains with the class for many weeks. The Ashburton Brass Band waß m attendance, and its lively strain -^dded muoh to the day's enjoyment. A number of articles were raffled and good value was obtained for same. Tbe rain came down so heavily about six o'oiook that there was no possibility of doing business m the evening, and it was arranged to hold a bazaar of the unsold goods and produce on Saturday m the Town Hall. On this day the same ladies gave their valuable assistance and the Bale was a great Buooesa. It is pleasing to state that the result was some £45 to the good, and that the ohuroh is now out of debt.
