The aotual position of the respeo'ive ooloniea as regards their indebtednesa was as follows at the end of 1888 :— Queensland, £25,840,950 ; New South Wales, £44,100,149 ; Victoria, £34,627.382 • South Australia, £19,147,700 ; Western Australia, £1.275,200 ; Tasmania, £4,499,470; New Zealand, £36,971,601 ; Fiji, £253,289. These are the total amounts after allowing for any sinking , fund that may have aoorued. The rate of net indebtedness per head of population at the end of last year was aB follows :—Queensland, £66 13a lOd ; New Zealand, £60 17s 7d ; South Australia, £60 3a Id ; New South Wales, £40 12a 4a ; Victoria, £31 13a 5d ; Tasmania, £29 8s lOd ; Western Australia, £28 14s, The population of the Colonies for last year was as follows : -Now South Wale?. 1,064,333; Viotoria, 1,062,050 j New Zaaland, 605,371 ; Queensland, 377,201 ; South Australia, 314,337; Tasmania, 144,314; Western Australia 42,059.
