LETTER FROM STANLEY

[Per Press /ibsooiation] London, November 26

It appear? there is no truth m the report which reached Stanley that Emm Bey was made a prisoner m August, but when the troops of the Equatorial province revolted, and the Mabdists invaded the district the rebels captured but immediately released Emm Bey, who never fell into the hands of the Mahdists.

(Recaived Novoaiboc 27, 1.30 p/n.) London, November 26 Stanley m a letter to the committee organised to makq arrangements for the relief of Emm Bey says that he waited at at Kavalli forty four-days to enable Selim, Emm's chief lieutenant, to collect the remainder of the refugees at Wadelai. Fearing however, that Selim was secretly assembling 700 rebel soldiers m order to seize his ammunition, Stanley decided on April 10 to start. The morbid indecision of Emm to leave Kavolli compelled Stanley to virtually coerce their followers to march. Shortly afterwards proof was obtained that the Egyptian officers m the camp had been treacherously conspiring with Selim. A straight oourse was travelled from Lake Albert Nyanza to Lake Victoria Nyanza. Fevers were dreadful, and m the month of July alone 141 of the followers were reported dead or missing. Stanley is indignant that only 600 instead of 10,000 people left Wadel&V and he blames Emm for this result. t : (Stanley is expected to arrive m England towards the end of January.
