The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1889. FARES TO THE EXHIBITION

There appears to be now no doubt that the New Zealand and fcouth ideas iixhibition, which is to be officially opened on Tuesday next, is going to prove a greater success than the most , sanguine of its promoters has ventured to anticipate. As a show it will be far I superior to anything of the kind ever before seen m this colony, and indeed ( while m point of magnitude inferior to the .Melbourne Exhibition, will m some respects be ot a more interesting character. There is bound to be an enormous influx of visitors from the Australian colonies, and very complete and, liberal arrangements have been made by the Steam Companies m the matter of means of conveyance at excursion fares, but so far as regards the public of New Zealand there have as yet been no correspondingly liberal arrangements made. The fares announced by the Kailway Commissioners may do very well for the opening, as on that occasion and during the first week large numbers 'of wealthy persons will be travelling who can well afford to pay the Bums at which the fares have been fixed, but they will not do at all for the general public. After the first week of the Show, all through the Christmas and New Year holidays there should be at least a weekly excursion train at prices which families can afford to pay, and if say the return fare from Christchurch first-class were fixed at 15s, and second-ciaes at 10s, f rom 10s and 7s 6d, from Timaru 7s 6d and ss, and from Oamaru at 5s and 2s 6d, many thousands of people would go to the Exhibition who will never dream of visiting it while the present tariff obtains, if the Commissioners want to make a haul this is the way to go about it.
