A Sydney inventor haa patented a principle ot parcels and post, and it is said passenger communication also, whereby the diatanoo botween Sydnoy and Melbourne oan ba traversed at tbe rate of 300 miles an hour. The Btook sales at the Ohristchuroh Metropolitan Show were well attended, but generally the prices obtainedjwere unsatislaotory. Mr Charles Withell's Lincoln rams realised the highest prioea m tbat seotion, up to 67 guineas being giveu for pickod sheep. MrDonnor, of Marlborough, scoured the moat giving as high as 32 guineas. Hugo's Buffalo Minstrels were accorded a fairly good house last evening, and gave an almost entirely fresh programme. The ludicrous extravaganza " The Conductor " was productive of great amusement, as also was that of •» The Telephone," whioh formed the wind-up of a somewhat too long pro* gramme: The Spanish Minstrels' mandoline and guitar playing and tbe ventriloquism of Mr Oaoar Smith were exoellent, und Mr Santley'a and Mias Tessie Cleveland's songs were deservedly enoored. A vory olever performance with the bonas, and a burlesque parody of " Where are you going my pretty maid?" |by Mr Charles Hugo also deserve mention as being enjoyable items. Altogether there was a capital bill of fare, A ship railway, on the Eads principle, Is being oonstruoted aorcss Ohigneoto Nook, tho isthmus, 17 miles wide, separating the bay of Fundy from the head waters of the Gulf of St Lawrence, and oonneoting Nova Scotia and Hew Brunswiok, Ships up to 1600 tons burthen, instead of sailing round the stormy coast of Nova Sootia, a distance of 700 miles, will be raised by hydraulic lifts upon an immenoe iron cradle resting upon wheels, and then hauled aoross tho isthmus by powerful locomotives at the rate, it is stated, of 10 miles an hour. The railway will lessen, by 500 miles, the diatance between St Lawrence porta and New York, Boston, and Portland. By using the ship railway, American shipping vessels will bo able to make two trips m a season instead of one. The work is estimated to cost £1,000,000, and to be completed by 1892. Says the N.Z. "Times":— A publio tria 1 of an improved process of oonverting a photo" graphic image on a gelatine surface into a relief or intaglio printing surfaoe was held at the works of J. E. Hayes, Lambton Quay, yesterday. The prooees oonsiats m the appli. cation of heat to a gelatine plate, bearing a photograph, m addition to the usual process of immersion m water only. It is olaimed that under tbe influence of heat those portions of the gelatine whioh are unaffected by the aotion of light and which are freely abaorbant of water, meet and draw by capillary attraction under the untnelted portions, foroing the latter as m relief, and produoing a surfaoe whioh may be printed from direot, or from whioh electrotypes and stereotypes may be i> ken. The Welling'on «• Evening Post " writes t— ' When the Hon Mr Hislop mounts the red ribbon of the Jjegion of Honor m his bpttonhole, he will very much resemble the jackdaw whioh borrowed and strutted about m borrowed peaocok plumes. By some official jugglery the honor earned by the New Zealand Minister of Eduoation, for the exhibit* sent to Paris, has been awarded to Mr Hislop. Now Mr Hislop was not Minister qt Education when the exhibits were got together ' ana forwarded to tho Exhibition. Mr Fisher was. But the honor acknowledged fo be Mr Fisher's due, has beet; awarded to hip former colleague, but present bitter enemy, Mr Hislop^ Bujbl} it tbe irony of fate. Whether the French Ezhibibition authorities org not aware that Ministerial eaistenoe is almost as precarious m New Zealand as m France, or whether the Gasparini inoident haa anything to do with it, ths plain faot remains tbat an honor won by Mr Fisher haa been awarded to Mr Hislop. Wil he strut m it ? If so, where is the honor?"
