THE MAYORALTY.
It is about time the burgeoaes of Ashburton were making a move with a view to securing a suitable candidate to £11 the Mayoral chair, the election to which important office should take place on the last Wednesday of the current month, Up to now we haven't heard a whisper on the subject — duo very probably to the fact that it is generally assumed (as we believe it is generally hoped) that his present Worship will consent to accept a renewal of his term of office. There isn't room for the smallest difference of opinion as to the admirable manner m which Mr Thomas has fulfilled the duties of his position, and if he will allow himself to bo re-nominated, everybody will be more than content ; but it is not fair to assume that he will voluntarily come forward without any intimation that it is the desire either of the Council or of the burgesses that he should do so, and it would be awkward to have at the last moment to be looking for a candidate. We therefore suggest that the best thing that could bo done would bo for a deputation to wait upon Mr Thomas without delay, and, if so, there will be general satisfaction at the news of their being successful m their errand.
