A lad named Ibell, 14 years of age, was apprehended on a oharge of laroeny by Constable Smart at Rakaia yesterday. It appears that the lad was on the tramp but meeting a eettler managed to get a lift m hia trap as far as Ohertsey, and on tbe wny abstracted pound note and some tobaooo from the oo . pooket of the kindly disposed owner of the trap. The boy travclleled by rail to Rakaia, where he suooeeded m making a considerable hole m the pound by liberally " shouting " lemonade and oigarettes for the deleotation of the Rakaia youths. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Helpmate Division Sons and Daughters of Temperance was hold at the Division rooms last evening, the W. Patriarch, G. W. Andrews, presiding. A large quantity of business of more or less importance was dealt with. Amongst other matters Bros W. H. Collins and J. Mullaney were elected to attend the Grand Division to be held at Dunedin next Deoember. There is every sign that 'the Helpmate Division is making rapid strides, and it bids fair to become one of tha most : healthy branohes of the Order m Canterbury* As one evidence of thie, theze were seven initiations last night, and seven others were proposed for membership. Another large gathering assembled laßt night at the Oddfellows' Hall to hear tbe Rev Mr Brown reply to the Rev Mr Berry's leoture on Conditional Immortality. Mr Brown spoke for olose on an hour and three quarters quoting Soripture m support of his contentions and remarking that Mr Berry's lecture was conspicuous for the absenoe of appeals to scriptural proof. After a number of questions hsl been answered to the apparent satisfaction of the bulk of the audienoe Mr George Leadley challenged Mr Brown to a publio debate, whioh challenge the latter gentleman readily aooepted. A hearty vote of thanks to the rev gentleman brought the meeting to a olose.
