LORD DERBY'S SPEECH,

Lord Derby m his speech at Liverpool, said the opposition to the Bill which proposed to give Responsible Government to Western Ausualia was the result of an attempt to keep that colony an independent State, m order to retain control over the land. They proposed to reverse the negation policy of the last forty years. To be consistent they must make their action retrospective, and apply it to other colonies. Then the cry of "Australia for the Australians" would be iasvitable.
