NEW METHOD OF WHEAT GKOWING
('•Oamaru Mali.") A somewhat new departure In wheat growing was tried at Tafpo by Mr M'Kay, manager for Mra Teaohemaker, last year. The plan adopted was to sow wheat on potato Und without re- ploughing or preparing In any form after tbe potatoee were dog. Forty acres were so treated, tbe wheat being merely sown and the diso harrows passed, quge $vei t h & soil. The result waa b.ighly satisfactory, tbe yield being _5_ bubals of Tuscan wheat to the aore. Five weeks later another seotlon of land which bad a'.qq been under potatoes was ploughed apd bs^rottod lo the usual manner and sown with Toaoan wheat but the yield was only 43 bushels. Th a year 380 aores whfqh had been panted with potatoes, has been sown with Tuaoan and velvet wheat without any previous preparation tbe bnd ba}ag ' Qlso?b*rrqwe_. qn*)g only rafter sowing. It will be Interacting to note that the' oost of preparing the land lo 'be usual way, viz, one ploughing and tbjree strpj-os of the harro^, would be 9a per asre, whereas the total ooet of merely harrowing and sowing after the potatoes had been dug did not exceed Is lOd per aore. The orops so troated this year are . look'ng m»gnifiaent, gqd, oqr Informant atates. snperior to goy tn t\xo diatrlot. Of course It must be remembered that the land on tbe Talpo estate Is among ths finest and rlohest In New Zealand. This year there are 000 acres on the estate under potatoes, and It has been deoided by Mr M'Kay to drill In the seed after one stroke of the harrows. The great advantage of tbe new treatment lies m ths number of acres (16) that oan ba dealt with dally, and tbp gseatly lessened coat of getting the land under orop.
