(Reoeived October 23, 2 p.m.) Brisbane, Ootober 23, Sir Henry Parkes, the Premier of New (South Wales, is on a visit here, and is consulting the Queensland Government on important inter-colonial matters. Referring to the question of federal defence, Sir Henry Parkes said : — -" We want an Australian Federal Army Aot empowering mobilization* Suoh a measure must emanate from the Imperial Parliament, whioh atone haa power to sanction such a soheme. Ii ia impossible for the Federal Oounoil of Australia to oreate an armed force of enormous power, supported by monej contributed by the various colonies. Thia question of a federal army is practically laying down one strong and immovable plank of the Federal soheme, and the complete platform must follow its adoption." In reply to r^ir Henry Parkes. the Queensland ' Premier, Sir Samuel Griffiths, said, m reference to the question of the federation of the coloniea, any workable soheme would be an acceptable one to Queensland. The Federal Oounoil, aB now constituted, was inadequate to copo with a scheme of joint defence, and it waß nover intended that suoh a question should be submitted to it. In the Oounoil they had only » short step towards federation, but the time was now ripe for a more definite advanoe, As regarded defence this wag now a fitting opportunity, though there oould be no complete federation wivho9(* fiscal union,
