It Is very gratifying to learn that tbe Oastoms revenue retarns of tho Colony are again showing a steady Increase. The total returns for the quarter ending ftoptf mb r, 1889, are ; — Oast mi revenue £3: 7,366 ; primage duty, £17,337 ; total £414,703 For the corresponding period of 'tat year the total returns were £359,223, or an Inorease of £55 470. This ■hows an improvement at the rate of £221,880 per annum, The prlno'psl Inoresees Id oar Imports dmlnj the psst qaarter are m spirits, wines, o!gs«, beer, tea, goods by weight, and ad valorem. The greatest lnorease Is In the latter, the raturna being £143,855, as against £112,661. The excise da<les foi the pnst quarter were— Tobaooo. £376; oigats, £90; baer, £11,967 ; foreign paaroels pos^ dalles, £491, 14» 3d,, These returns show unmistakably that notwithstanding the many oootrary opinions, the trade of this Colony Is on the steady lnoreue. The improvement In onr railway and Customs returns, combined with the reduotlon la oar expenditure, point out that we may, with safety, anticipate a substantial ■urplns at the end of ths fjoanoUl year. -("N.Z.Tiraos,")
