The area of the crop was 26 3*1,765 aores, as compared with aa acreage of 26.608.000 acres, and with 26,854,882 aores frown last year. The report states that food stocks at the end of 1888 89 were low, m consequence of indifferent harvests m the two previous ye»rs, and large local consumption oauaed by a partial failure of the early crops of the present year. Prices la India are hlgl er than they were a year ago, and this rise, together with the townees of food stocks, will operate against extensive rf^ r o° g ' The Bhl P«»e°t» of wheat In ?«?; B ,L' monote(i t0 881,000 tons, or 4,031,057 quarters, and it ia expected by the Department that they will not exceed that quantity m the ourrent season. With a crop of nearly three mlllloni less to dtiw npop, «ud low stocka, It might be supposed that shipments will be greatly reduoed ; but an advance of prices Id Europe would, no doubt, be a powerful magnet.
