TEMPERANCE DEMONSTRATION.
The temperance dcmonstiation this afternoon, commenced by the formation of a pro* cession from the lower end of East Street opposite the Ashburton Hotel. This was headed by the Salvation Army Brass Band with their blood and fire banner, and followed by adult members of the Star of the East Lodge of Good Templars carrying the new banner of their lodge, a very preitily designed one m white satin with a purple star or rather maltese Cross m the centre with the name and emblems of the Lodge and Order m ornamental silk work. About 150 children followed next, members of various Bands of Hope m Ashburton, and next came about 50 adults, members of the local Good Templar Lodges and Salvation Army. Several country vehicles, well loaded up with living freight, brought up the rear of the proceßsion, which was marshalled by Rev. A. M. Blake and Mr Fawcett, on horseback, In this order they proceeded up East street, where a good many joined m the procession, this being witnessed by a considerable crowd of spectators, along the line of march.
