The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1889. WHAT ABOUT THAT CLOCK?

It is about time that the Borough Council, or whoever may bo charged with the duty of carrying out the public clock project, began to give some evidenco that they mean business. It was two yoars ago last June that the money was subscribed, and all tho public knows I about tho result is that after discussing 'various proposals for a fitting memorial of Her Majesty's Jubileo it was finally decided that this should take the form of a public clock, to bo placed iv the " tower " of the municipal buildings Baring Square, that tenders were invited for supplying the clock, and that of an Ashburton clock-maker accepted, and that aB to the " tower " one of tho City Fathers generously intimated his willingness to provide the bricks. So long ago as last May vre inspected the detail drawings of the clock itself, and under- ' stood that it was then ready to be erected, but that is the last we have heard about it. The fact is, everybody concerned, subscribers, Borough Council, Jubilee Memorial Committee, and for all that appears the clock-make^ too, have gone sound asleep, and it is about time they were one and all waked up. We hare, therefore, essayed the task, and venture to suggest that if it be intended to erect the memorial m time to bo of service to the present generation it is quite worth while to follow the advice once tendered to Mrs Dombey and « make an effort." Bat now that so long a time has elapsed, we venture the suggestion that the clock might now be made a "jubilee" memorial m a double seme. Let it be finished and put ia its place by the last day of the current year, and set agoing for the first time on the first January 1890. It will then be an accomplished fact m time to mark the opening of the Jubilee year of the Colony, as well as being a memorial (somewhat after the fact}, of that of Her Most Gracious Majesty.
