MELBOURNE GRAIN MARKET
Tbe National Mortgago and Agency Com* pany of New Zealand report under date September 80:—
The harvest prospects oontinue very good, South Australia expeots to have 12 bushels of wheat per acre, a very high average, wbile our farmers speak very oheerfully of their crops.
Wa?4?i— There is great difference of opinion aB to the quantity available before next harvest. Prices have steadily receded from last month— sb 6d large lines, to 5a Id— but at tho time of writing tbere are some signs of improvement, brought about, no doubt, by the extra duty and falling off of oountry arrivals. New Zealand wheat has been Bold here at equal to 3s 2d, f.0.b., early m the month, but its importation at a margin is now impossible.
Oais have gone to and fro with the obanoes of tbe duties, and their future seems to bang upon what New Zealand will do. A rush of shipments now would irretrievably break the market. Stocks here are Btill large, and a apeoial boat (" Cairntoul ") has jußt arrived with fipmo 17,000 saoks. These, however, must bave coot owners muoh more than our present equivalent, wfaioh will help to sustain values. Maize supplies falling off will also help oats. £ noes to-day* nominally, 3a 8d io 8a lOd delivered, but little doing. Bablev is unchanged, apd drags. I^ast month's fjgureß repeated. Feeding sorts Weaker, by \SI to 2d.
