AN OUTSIDE OPINION
(PHft PiIESU ASSOCIATION.) : , i - ■ Melboubns, October 5. The "Argus" this morning publishes a leading article, reviewing the last session of the New Zealand Parliament,' m which it states that Sir Atkinson, the Premier, deserves the utmost credit' for hib retrenchment scheme, and 'lor his determination to dispense with borrowing as far as possible, [Referring to Sir Harry's ideas, the " Argus " says :— <( Stringent though they may be, they will probably mark the returning point from the ruinouß system of finance intro duced with a tinsel rhetoric by Sir Julius' Yogel to a more equal and national development of the country's resources. Judging, however, from recent events the Ministry requires another and more rallying polioy. " It adds that public economy will not lead to permanent popularity, and it may give lively confidence during a depression to have a man with the moral firmness and courage to face the situation, but such gratitude was liable to pass away. It is absurd, the " Argus" thinks, to attribute the prosperity of New Zealand wholly to the Government, and it goes on to say that the action of the Bank of New Zealand j m writing off its losses has given an impetus to commerce. The '* Argus" i adds that still more is this prosperity due to the good season experienced m New Zealand ; and it considers the New Zealand Exhibition, to be held m | Dunedin next month, will bring thousands to the colony who will discover means of advanoing the trade between that and the other Australasian i colonies. .
