A letter for George White from beyond the oolony awaits delivery at the Aahburton Post Offioe. A Panmure (Auckland) resident, Mra Elizabeth Devaney, died on Saturday at the age of 10 1 years. A oonoert and ball m aid of the Library Fund will be held m the Ohertsey Sohoolroom on Friday (to-morrow) oommenoing at 8 p.m. Tho State Grange of Illinois, U.S.A., offers to pay 10,000 dollars to anyone who will first invent a maohine or device to at ta oh to a reaping maohine, that will bind sheaves ot wheat and oats with straw. An Adelaide oable of date 2nd iußtant states that a cabman namod Crawford had shot his wife three times, and the unfortunate woman was dying. The oause is attributed to the dissolute babitß of the wife. Mr Leap of the Junotion Hotel, Papanui road, sustained a losb m the sudden death of a valuable horse on Sunday last. It appears that he went to the stable to harness the horse preparatory to placing it m the trap for a drive, when the animal jibbed, and rearing up on its hind legs struck ita head againßt a beam, and fell to the ground, death taking plaoe instantaneously. A prominent physioian waa seen buying a barrel cf onionß, and being •• guyed " about his purohaße, said :•— " I always have boiled onions for dinner for the benefit of my ohildren. I like onions too; they are tbe beet medioine I know of for preventing ooldß. Supply onions — raw, boiled or baked— to the children three or four times a week, and they'il grow up healthy and Btrong. No worms, no scarlatina, no diphtheria, where ohildren eat plenty of onionß every day." The preßent estimated population of the United States is 6_,000,000, and it has been recently ascertained that the number of the people of that oountry is now being increased annually by immigration to the extent of at least half a million, The foreign population of the States is not far below 14,000,000. It haß always been tbe polioy of tbe United States to encourage immigration to the fullest possible extent. It is m this way her rapid rise and progress has been accomplished. A pretty little Btory about the Biege of Paria by tbe Germans m 1870 has just oome io light. During the bombardment of the oity the shells began to fall dangerously near the Jardin des Plantes, where M. Ohevreul had hiß laboratory. Fearing that irreparable damage might be done to the oause of soienoe, that gentleman indited a letter to Eaiter Wilbelm, m whioh he pointed out the faots, and requested that the guns might be pointed m another direotion. This, it is said, was at onoe done by the Gorman authorities, showing that they were by no means tbe barbarians, bent only on destruction, that many writors would have ; the publio believe. i The morphine habit has beoome so prevalent m Berlin tbat it has beoome neoe.sary I for the Government to adopt preventive measures. It is said that women are particularly addioted to the use of the drug, and that it iB no uncommon eight to see one of them produce a syringe m publio and take a ' hypodermic injection. A law has recently been passed regulating tbe Bale of morphine, ' by wbioh druggists are forbidden to sell the drug exoept on the prescription of a doctor < residing m the distriot. The prescription is • not returned to the purchaser, who must procure a new one upon every occasion. ! Wholesale druggists can only Bell to dootors and obemists, and m all oases great oare must be taken as to the identity of the purobaser. The following statistics aie interesting aB showiog the extent of the tourist industry m Switzerland. Altogether 1002 inns have been bnilt m Switzerland for tbe speoial use of tourists. They oontain 58,137 beds, an average of 58 apiece. The oapital value of the land, buildings, and furniture belonging to these , 1002 establishments is est imated at £12,800,000 The net profit on tbis outlay, after deduotion of all working expenses, is said to be only 5 per oent., so that touriata have little reason to complain of " extortion " m Switzerland. It is an astonishing fact that no fewer than 283 of these 1002 inns are situated m positions above 3400 feet (or nearly tbe height of Snowdon), while 14 are aotually above 6500 feet m elevation. A private meeting of influential gentlemen interested m breeding and fattening sheep, waß held at Timaru on Tuesday afternoon, for the purpose of considering tbe advisability of forming a new Refrigerating Oompany for South Canterbury. It was shown by faots and figures that the oost of new works and maohinery had been muoh reduoed, and tbat the methods of generating and applying oold air were so muoh more economical, that new works would be certain to yield a good return. It transpired tbat many necessary preliminary enquiries had been made, with satisfactory results It was unanimously agreed { to promote a new Company, and the Chairman was empowered to oall a meeiog at an | early date to further the pro'eot. The tremendous question of the proper robes and hoods to be worn by musioal graduates at Cambridge has just been settled by the senate of the University. The regulations bb to this new aoademio millinery would ocoupy about half a oolumn of this paper (Bays the '• Daily Newa "). But, put briefly, it seems that Mus, Doos. may now wear their old floarlet robes until worn out, but that afterwards they are to be resplendent m a gown and hood of " damasked cream white silk, lined with dark ohe.ry r ooloured satin ; " that Mus. Bjob. will wear, as usual, the gowns of Baohelors of Art and Law, but with hood of dark oherry-ooloured satin > and tbat a Mus. Doc will also be entitled to wear the round velvet " dootor's bonnet " as a head dress when m bis white gown. Jn tbe early part of August a number of the tribe'b °- tne Sioux Indians handed over to the Amen"""*" Government for settlement purposes 11 ,bod,w? aorea of t l h . e ? **?***& m the State cf Dakota, iCT Which the tribes reoeived 14,000,000 dollars m oa.- I .' 0a *h ,B land are the oelebrated Blaok Hills, a riCJ mineral belt. To show the energy of the Amerioan people, within 48 hours of the time tbe Indiana ceded their reservation to the Government no fewer than five railway companies prepared to run their lines through the land, and work was aotually started within a week. These are the companies named : —The Blaok Hills Central, the Blaok Hilla and Northern Pacific, the Obioago and Northwestern, tbe Chicago and St Paul, the Illinois Central. At present the population | of tbe land is nil, yet fivo separate railway i companies havo courage and knowledge to escalate; for paßt experience m Amerioa show, that population will follow a railway as _ure as small boys will a circus prooession. ; A writer m " Land and Boa " puts it tbufcly :— There is a town iv Canterbury, It — , wbioh m my computation beatß o'hcir semi-villages m snobbishness. No doubt to a great extent tbis snobbi.hness is owing to the fact tbat most of the leading people are descended from agricultural laborers or hawkers. A Bhopkoeper ot this place was one day informing half a dozen , people of hiß wife's aristooratio relations, and lamenting tbat thero were none good enough to associate with her. " She is, these were bis words, " descended from the Grecian King Lymachus, who oome over to Britain with Julius Gajsar." «' Ye_," replied one of the strangers m a 000 l nonobalant tone. " There was a Lymaohus who oame over to Britain. He was, however, not a Greoian King, but Gajsar'a barber. Tbe name is supposed to be a corruption of lying Marcus, for so the barber wbb oalled owing to bis vivid imagination. It is supposed tbat it was the i same Marcus who told the stories about the i elk wbioh the great soldier gravely inserted m i his commentaries." Sinoe then the man has i pot penti.n-;d h.B wifi'p moliot angestors,
A 401 b eel was caught by a native m a small lake m Hawke's B_y last week. It was sft long and 18 inobes m oiroumferenoe. The annual tea meeting of the Rakaia Presbyterian Ohuroh is announood to take place m the looal Town Hall on Tuesday | , noxt at 6 p.m , after whioh the usual publio j meeting will be held at whioh addresses will I j bo given by the Revs Beattie, Blake, Collins, I Erwin, and West, interspersed with musio by J the ohoir. An aooident ooourred at Methven yesterday, whereby a man named Alexander Greenhill | loßt his life. Greenhill was employed at Mount Hu(t Btation and when returning to \ the station from Methven with a loaded dray and team of horses, fell off the load under tbe wheel whioh passed over his ohest, inflicting | injuries so serious that he suooumbed to them. An inquest was to have been held to-day. Carrier pigeons are used by the mail steamers arriving m the Fiji islands to announoe thoir presenoe. They are Bent by planters to their New Zealand or Australian agents, returned by steamer to the islands and liberated when the vessel reaohes port. On the arrival home of the birds, the planters immediately prepare their fruits, etc., for the steamer's return trip to the oolonies, saving muoh valuable time, and enabling them to Bhip fruit m the best oondition. There has been a good deal of fun mad t over the Ladieß* "Literary Dinner," or, as i ought to be oalled, Literary Ladieß* Dinneri wbioh oame off m London reoently. No men were admitted except tbe waiters, the menu had piotureß of oats on the outside, the Queen's health was drank m coffee, and one married lady proposed " The Martyrs of tbe World— the Married Women;" whereupon Mra Mona Oaird, who presided, made a speech on the marriage question, but dosed the evening by giving the toast of " Absent Husbands." One lady oalled for oigarettes. Some male reporters tried to extraot information from the waiters; but the wise editora sent their lady contributors as guests, and , thus bad a full acoount of the proceedings m tbeir papers the next day, greatly to the wrath of the other ladies, and to the ohagrin of the i unwise editors. , A good story is told of Frank Linooln • ; While showing m New York at one time* 1 he [Went to a restaurant accompanied by hiß 1 time-payment oarpet bag, m whioh were two \ paper collars, a paok of faked poker oards, a \ small Bible, and numberless pawn tiokets. He plaoed his bag on a ohair alongside of him at the table and ordered m his banquet. ' After finishing the repast the w.iter brought him m a bill for two, "Why do you oharge me for two ? " said Frank, " Your; i self and oarpet bag, Bah," replied the nig. , " You Bee sah the bag is on a ohair at the i table," " O X-, Mr Snowball," rejoined the j humorist, •' but it has had nothing to eat as . yet," So be opened the bag, and put m a ; fowl, a loaf, bottle of sauoe, some slices of . ham. and a few tarts, and telling tht waiter i that he never had any objeotion to part for 1 the accomodation of bis travelling companion, ■ he paid the bill and departed. 1 At the Oonferenoe of laymen of the Anglioan ' Ohuroh some very sultry things were said re* ' Bpeoticg the disinclination to maintain 1 ohurohes on the part of Auckland working men and to attend the services. One vestry- ■ man said, " They don't o to ohuroh from one ' year's end to another — aye, from one end of ) their lifetime to tbe other. They are ■ christened there when ohildren; they don't I enter the ohuroh till they get married thero, I and then they don't go again till they want to i be buried. A great sootion gave their odd' ' coins to the ohurob, but left anytbiog iv the , Bhape of religious rites to tbe female relatives ." ) Ooe lay repreaentative, from Onehunga, said ■ aa things were now a olorgyman with what i he got oould not support a wife and ohildren, t and the olergy would have to take a leaf from . the Roman Catholics and live m monastic j houseß ; yet Onehunga runs seven publio > houses to a population of 4000 and a racecourse without difficulty. It was stated one , oountry olergyman had to travel to Auok- , land lately on foot as he oould not pay his , train fare. ■ SANDER and SONS' EUOALYPTI EX- * TRACT. — In protection of the worldwide • fame our manufacture has aoquired all over ) the globe, we publish the following : — Hazard, I M.D., Professor of General Pathology and | Diseases of the Mind and Nervous System, ' says m an editorial published m the " Olinioal ' Beoord : " — *' We have examined half-a-dozen ■ specimens of different manufactures; the' i preparation of Sander and Sons was the only > one that proved to be reliable and correspondt ing to soientino tests." Another oonoootion 1 oalled " Refined Extraot of Euoalyptus " has made its appearance sinoe. This produot , stands, aooording to Dr Owen, foremost iv causing injurious effeots That gentleman ] communicates, at a meeting of the Medioal r Sooiety of Victoria, tbat a ohild living at . Fitzroy beoame most seriously indisposed i through its use. In another oase a lady states on the strength of statutory declaration that Bhe suffered cruelly from the effects of the Bame oonoootion.
