There is a ourioua oiroumstanae in connection with the Jubilee of New Zealand settle* ment ; tbe days of the week fall on the same days of the month they did fifty years Bgo. A Wanganui firm have just imported a first-rate plant for the manufacture of play* ing cards, and it is said that there is a strong possibility of the industry proving very remunerative. Sir E. A. Dashwood, Bart., who has been eking out a subsistence in New Zealand as a gum digger for some years past, was reoently bequeathed estates in England worth £15,000 a year, and goes "Home." He was the beßt boxer on the Wairoa River, and an all-round good man. In Colonel Mundy's " Our Antipodes ; or Eesidenoe and Ramblings in the Australian Colonies," there ia a story of three footsore wanderers on their road to tbe Bondigo goldfields meeting nnder tbe shadow of a gigantio gum tree. The first of the three muttered to himself, potto voce, two lines from Horaoe, the second oontinued the stanz >, and the third finished the ode. Tbe duty on fire, marine, aooident, fidelity, live stock, plate glass, or guarantee polioies is due on Maroh sth. The " Lyttelton Timeß " remarks that the member for Waipa is tbe third M.H.R., and the tenth member of Parliament who baa died sinoe tha last general eleotions, that ia during the last two years. Messrs Pearson and Leveatam and tbe Hone Johnston, Wi Tako, Williamßon, Chamberlain, Colonel Brett, Menzies, and Robinson were the preceding viotims. That is a beavy death roll for bo ahort a Bpaoe of time. As an example of the durability of New Zealand timber we may mention that Mr Joseph Hall, of Marton, has wheels still in use whioh be made of kowhai 30 years ago, and the wood is as Bound now as it wbb whon first put in. Messrs Henderson Bros also have very successfully tested kowhai, They have cogs made of it, whioh have been it use at their mill for a quarter of a oontury and tbey are still aB good as ever. — " Rangitjkei Advooate." The " London Garden " gives the following dasoription of a remarkable Frenoh pear tree, whioh, althoußh over three ceoturieß old, ia still bearing fine fruit in abundanoe. Its growth is vigorous ; and the tree bears eaob year from 3000 to 4000 pears. Its date of planting, written on a stone plaoed in the wall, was 1680, in tbe reign of Henry 111. The property where it was found planted was formerly a hospital. This venerable treo is taken oare of by the ownera ; so that even now a long life is assured it. Anglers will be glad to know that the Amerioan brook trout has beoome well established in some of our streams. A nioe ba.ket of eight wbb taken last week by Mr Harry Milner in the Flemington distriot. They were Bhown in Mr H. M. Oarßon's window on Saturday and attraoted great attention, though the piok of the basket was early in tbe day annexed by " the veteran " to Bend to Ghristohuroh as evidenoe of the riohea of the Ashburton streams. An exchange saya Messrs Stevens and Gordon, the well known auctioneers of Bulls, Rangitikei, are to offer in February poxt by auotion, 6500 aores of the Oroua Downs Estate in tbe jfaoawatu Dißtriot. North Island land iB becoming quite an attraction to many of our Canterbury men, and as this blook is to be out up into fifty-four farms, ranging from 66 acres to 22. acres eaob, there is great probability that quite a little Oolony of Canterbury farmers will eettle on tbe Oroua Downs. Apropos ot this estato we may mention that tbe lambing of tbe Hampshire Downs upon it this year bas run up to 120 per oent. A peculiar oiroumstanoe in connection with tho habits of Beagulls, and one probably not well known, has recently been observed in , the distriot. A resident of Greytown'bad a tame sea gull whjob ran about the yard and bodame quite at borne with the fowls and dogs kept there. Qrie day it was observed to popnoe upon and capture a sparrow whioh was qnßuspiaiously feeding with the fowls. It then, walked leisurely to a d£sb of water standing near, dipped the sparrow in and then swallpwed jt. The gull was closely watojjed after this, apd has frequently beon seen to repeat the performance, evidently thinking that all was fiah that came to bis beak. Mr T. Lindsay Buiok delivered his leoture on Home Rule for Iroland at the Oddfellows' Hall last evening, Major Steward oooupying the chair. The leoture, whioh oooupied about two hours in delivery, was a most able and eloquent exposition of tbo aim and objoots of those ,w|.o are fighting in the oause of Ireland in the jfrnperial Parliament, on the public platform and in the Press, and was calculated to reiioye a groat deal of misconception on the part of those who are on the opposite Bide. Ho was olear in argument, foroible in diotion, apposite in illustration, riah in imagery, and felicitous in expression, and kept the attontion and intorest of his audience throughout, being frequently greeted with applause. At the close a , unanimous vote of thanks to the leoturer , was passed on the motion of Mr Hughes, . seoonded by Mr Byrne, and a similar oompli- [ ment to the ohair olosed the proceedings. This evening Mr Buiok will leoture on " The \ \ Exiles ot "Erin," and the ohair will be ta^.n ■ by bia Worship tfcs fttyw,
The " Corowa Times " (Queensland) relies a comioal ooourrenoe tbat took place n few d-iys _ince at Dry Creek; It appears that a fermenting vat full of wine was aooessiblo to eome bullocks, whioh helped themselves rather largely, and soon beoame intoxioated. Then oommenoed a general uproar, in whioh skin, hair, borne, and hoofs oiroulated freely. One enormtus animal made Beveral ineffectual attempts to stand on his head, but only saooeeded in breaking one of his horns. A copple of whips, however, soon drove tbem into a paddock, where they lay down to sleep 1 off the effects of their potations. A Baltimore telegram of August 7th says : — " On a two-mile circular traok the startling speed of two mileß a minute was this afternoon maintained for about ten miles by a three-ton motor of the Electric Automatio Transit Company of Baltimore, This speed equalß three miles per minute on a straight traok. David G. Weems, the inventor, oon* duoted the experiments. The Company will build at once a five-mile oiroular traok on Long Island to demonstrate the practicability of the eleotrio passenger system, and aleo the automatio system wbioh was tried to-day, and is intended only for light express packages, mails, and newspapers. Edison was present and pronounced it the greatest conception sinoe l ho telegraph. Tbe road will be fenoed in with barbed wire, to keep off oattle, and, being insulated, the wires will be used for telephoning and signaling along the line. Bead this certificate :— " 24th April, 1885.— Messrs Sander and Sons,— lt iB with the greatest of pleasure tbat I testify to tho exoellenoe of your Euoalypti Extraot. Having had inflammation of the bone of tbe leg, whioh oame on after a severe attaok of low fever, I was attended by Dr J. Boyd, wbo had made strenuous efforts to Bave my leg, but without suooess. He found it necessary to amputate my limb. Having heard in tbe meantime of the wonderful oures worked by tbe Euoalypti Extraot, I obtained a bottle, and the extraot had not been applied more than an hour when I began to feel greatly relieved. After applying the extraot every four hours for nine or 1 ten days I waa out of all danger. I would persuade all who may be affeoted with any 1 ] suoh disease to give the Euoalypti Extraota trial, and I am oonvinoed that they will find it the most wonderful of medicines. — Yoars, etc.. E.J.
