ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of the Asbburton : Borough Council was held last evening. ( Present — The Mayor, and Councillors Brooke, 1 Scott, Keir, Bird, and Cuthbertson. Friedlander and Macf-rlane. ! mayor's statement. i The Mayor said that the debit balance at i the Bank was 13 s 3 d * The amounts ] which hid been received since last meeting '. were :— Rates, £39 ; rents of reserves, £1 ; rent of Pound, £2. ios; excise license, £3 15s ; carrier's license, £l ; earth sold, £$ 16s 4d ; Library account, 18s ; refund bridge, 4s. Total, £SA 3» 4d. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read (1) From Charitable Aid Board asking for paymeht of the Council's subsidy.— lt was deeded to pay half tbe amount due, deferring the payment of the J remaining half till a future date.— (*) From Mr Webster, stating that he was prepared to advise on the subject of electric lighting. — Referred to the Lighting Committee.— (3) From Mr Et Wiliams, asking permission to erect a verandah in Park street. — Permission was granted subject to the usual conditions. RESERVES COMMITTEE. The Reserves Committee recommended that a Glasgow lease be granted to tbe xN.Z.L. & M.A. Co. in respect of the reserve occupied by them, subject to the payment to the Council of a sum as compensation ; that Mrs Wilkie's offer to lease gravel reserve be declined ; and that Mr Restell's offer to rent Section 1223 from yesr io year be accepted. It was resolved to accept Mrs Wilkie's offer for gravel pit reserve, provided that the Council retain the right to deposit soil in the old gravel pit. The remainder of the report was adopted. ENGINEERS* REPORT. The Engineers reported as follows :— Tank for filling water cart : We find that in October 1886, we reported to the Works Committee that the cost ol laying pipes and erecting tank below Burnett street crossing, for filling the water cart would be about £$0. The Committee resolved that it did not ieel justified in recommending the expenditure, as it was uncertain if any saving in the time occupied in filling the water cart would be effected. — Additional Water Supply: The work of laying pipes, altering intake, buiding sumps, etc., is irrtually complete, and tbe reservoirs are. filled. We consider the result as to the delivery when required, of the additional quant ty of water in Bast Street to be satisfactory. — The labor gang have beep engaged in iorming running track in the Domain, laying pipes, and other work connected with the extra water supply, planting willows in Riverbed, carting, shingling, etc., clearing up rubbish in streets, and sundry maintenance work. ' The report was adopted. BY-LAWS. The matter of framing by-laws to put a stop to the practice of tethering cattle across footways, and to meet the case of people driving without lights at night through the Borough was referred to the By-laws Committee. LICENSES. Licenses were granted as follows: — Carriers, A. Bean; Petroleum, H. Zander. FOOTPATH. It was decided *o notify the owner of property in Burnett Street to repair crossing over footway, worn away by traffic. 1 SANITARY. 1 A committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs I Williamson, Keir and Brooke, was appointed ' to inspect certain premises in the town. 1 ASPHALT. A lengthy and somewhat involved discussion 1 on the subject of asphalting took place, but ' , nothing definite was arrived at. BARING SQUARE. ' Cr Scott asked what steps would be neces* , sary to cut up Baring Square into building ' sites. 1 The Mayor said that an Act of Parliament would be required. He would advise Cr I Scot to bring trie matter up when there was a : fuller meeting. i PAYMENTS. 1 Accounts amounting to £180 were passed : for payment and the Council adjourned.
