The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1889. FOOTPATHS AND LIGHTS.
Broadly speaking, the condition of our streets and the general appearance of our clean bright-looking borough reflect credit upon the administration of tho municipal authorities. But " there is no rule without an exception," says the proverb, and the truth of the saying has exemplification m more localities than one, even m our model town. This is very apparent m two respects, m the shameful condition of some parts of the footways and m the want of light atnight m several places. Not very long ago workmen were busy putting the footwaysin better order, but strangely enough their attention seems to have been I devoted to those which least needed it, while those which stood most m need of repair were entirely neglected. For example, the asphalt m Burnett street was touched up and top-dressed, although m a very fair state of repair, while that m Tancred street was quite neglected. Yet the condition of the footpath m that street, between East street and Gass street, is simply disgraceful. The asphalt here appears never to have been properly laid down, and the footway is m many places worse for pedestrians than an ordinary Bhingled path. And this condition of things has been existent (or more than a year, for we recollect calling attention to the matter quite twelve months ago. We wonder the ratepayers m the locality have not ere this made urgent representations to the Council, and certainly it is high time for the credit of the town that the work of repair were taken m hand. There are other places also which require attention, but there are none so bad as this, and this particular piece of footway should be seen to at once. Then m the matter of lighting, there are several dark corners which stand m need of illumination, as for instance the corner of Gass and Burnett streets, near the Orange Hall, and the corner of Kermode Btreet at its junction with the East Belt at the Old Cemetery, and several other places which could be indicated. We kn w the Borough Council is not troubled with a plethora of funds, but m providing for the necessary works of the ensuing year we hope that the matters we have indicated will not be overlooked.
