THE KAIWARRA MURDER

Wellington, August 27. After lunch John Dowd was further examined. He Baid that he frequently went out shooting with Ohemis' gun, and was out on the Sunday before Hawkins was murdered After shooting he put the powder flask, shot, and caps, baok m tha right drawer In the bedroom, but waa not sure whether he put the wads back. He then saw m the drawer the wad pnnch, the tin of blasting powder, the dagger, aome dynami c t*nps, some fuses, a ooooa tin* Und other articles, which he did not take notice of. The house m which witness lived was searohed by the police on tho same day as Ohemis' house was Searohed. On Sunday, Jnne2-d, after the murder, Mrs Ohemis told witness something about the deteotives, and {a oonsequenoe be went to the right hand drawer and examined it. He found m it the revolver, the powder fliak, the wad outter, some dynamite caps, aome gm oap_», blasting powder, fuses, and come revolver cartridges. Witness had tea at Ohemis' that day He did not see Ohemis, he was out about the ahed. Mrs Ohemis made tea, and witness had tea by himself. Witness oame to town after Onemls' arrest to see about engaging * eolloitor to defend him. He was told at the polioe station that Mr Devine, Bolioitor, had B°en Obemia, so he (witness) did not go to Mr Jellfooe, whom he had been Instruoted to retain. He worked with Ohemis at one time, and lived for eighteen months with him. That was more than twelve months ago. On ra-examlnation he said that he wis positive he returned the fl-.sk to the right drawer. On 26th May the wad-cutter was m the drawer. He saw the drawer before and after the visit of tha polioe on Jgne 5.h. It waa here shown to witness that m his affidavit to Government he had said that on Sunday, June 2nd, ho had tea with Louis Ohemis aod his (witness's) s!s f ar. He was asked to explain the d^t-orapanoy. Witness said it was a mls'ske. What he aald now was »me. F_e-examlned by Mr .Tellloop, he said chat the affidavit was drawn up by Mr Jelllooe and read over to witness. Ohemis was recalled, and waa about to explain what took plaoe at the gaol ona night between himself and Mr Jelllooe, but an objection by Mr Bell was upheld. Sir Harry Atkinron w r :a reoalled, and deposed that the statement sent by Ohemis to the Executive Oounoll had not been published before it was laid on the table of the Bouse of Representatives on Frldav, and he considered it very nnlikely that Mrs Chemia or anyone on her behalf knew tbe contents before then. The oourt adjourned until to-morrow morning. Wellington, August 2S On the perjury oases being resumed this morning, Mr Jelllooe undertook to produce the shot pouoh and knife found near the aoene of the murder on Sunday laat, if defendant's counsel called the finder. He thought that tbe ends oi justice might be defeated by their production, ?and the Orown would have tt> take the responsibility. He alao swore to seeing four quail at Ohemis' plaoe on June 2. In crossexaminatlon he gave a description of Ohemis' shot pouoh, whioh waa an ordinary pooket. Witness heard of the shot pouoh found on Sunday, To his knowledge the latter was not ln tbe possession of Ohemis en 31st May. Jas. Gibson told witness that he had lent Ohemla the pouoh found on Sunday. He waa told that before tha commencement of the shooting session, whloh opened on Marob, that was a long time before Ohemis was arrested for murder. The pouoh aent by Gib/jon to Ohemis belonged to Hodges of Ka.m,rra. He never saw it In Ohemla' post-esaion, nor was he aware that it was at Qhemls' . plaoe m May. On hearing of th.a finding of the pouoh, he and Dowd went to sea | Ojbson. They had a conversation with Gibson and Mra Ohemis about the pouoh, but not about ihe knife.
