Sydnbt, August 26. Franceville, an important harbor m the Island of Sandwich, one of the New Hebrides group, has proclaimed its independence and M. Chevillraud has been elected President of the commune. The French warship Sanone saluted the flag of the new Commune, and circulars have been addressed to the various Governments, asking them to recognise its independence. William Kennedy, manager of the New Zealand Equitable Insurance Company, was found on the beach m the harbor, Death is supposed to be the result of poisoning, but the inquest was adjourned. He had a wife and family m Dunedin. Sargeant's body has been recovered from the galley of the Centennial unmutilated.
