Aioken Carriok's residence at Ellerslie was destroyed by fire last night. Total insurance £1650. The house belonged to A Saunders, of Melbourne. Mr Oarrick and family were away from home when the fire occurred. Tbe Equitable has a polioy of £750 and the National of £800. The latter is re-insured for £800 m the New Zealand Office, whioh Office also hat £100 on the building. Peter Horley, a young man of 29, a brother of the heavy weight lifter of that name, fall dead on the Railway wharf to-day while lifting a sack of grain. They were fellow servants on Simons' Pass ■tatlon, Maokerz'e Country, twelve miles from the next house, and were left alone for some days by their master and mistress, named Matheson, going away from home. Defendant, a man about 50, frightened the girl, then 18, Into consent by threatening to hang himself, and alao threatening her. He repeated the conduct on two or three other occasions when similarly left together. The girl was afraid to tell her mistress. Caring a heavy thunderstorm this morning with strong gale, the gable end of Fleming and Gllki son's old floor mill oollapsed, ceding damage to the new portion In course of construction. It is believed the damage was caused by vibrations from the tbnnder.
