Mr Clifton, Oattle Inspector, has submitted to the Minister of Ltods hts report on Wellington dtirfed. Eighty foot d»lriesand 17S8 cows were Inspected.. Of this number 985 ojws were la good health, 726 though Iq good heilth were In low oondltlon. 16 were In donbtful health, and 11 were actually diseased. The water aopply for the oowb was good In 71 oases, middling In 10 cases, and bad m 3 oases. Of tha dairies 42 are reported at dean, 14 as middling, and 28 dirty. Some cf those mentioned aa dirty were 11 simply Indescribably bo, oowa wad* Ing throogh filth, and than being milked with nddera dripping with the filth." The water for dairy use Is generally fairly good, bnt In Beveral instanoaa water Is drawn from almost stagnant creaks. la three oasea at least tha manure drained Into auoh creeks, and no other water was provided for washing otns eto. Mr Olihon Baya he cannot connect the presence of typhoid fever m Welling* ton with the milk supply, but adda thai the conditions unfor which this milk is brought into consumption should be Improved. He recommends the systematic supervision of the mi:k Bapply. Dr Martin's report on a oertaln dairy at Kirorl, brought ap at tUe meeting of th» OUy Oouooll to-night, diaaloaed a scandalous state of neglect. The water-olosefc and piggery adjoined the cow stalls, which were several Incbeß thick with filth, The Mayor, m speaking to the report, said the Premier promised to bring In a Bill this session empowering local bodies to Inspect dairies, and charge fees for the Inspection, of the same.
