_ v _ JN'BLSON, AugOßi 22 The Sapreme Court has been engaged all day on the case of Weir v Homer and Craig an i aotion for damages, £1500, for false im. prisonmenti and malicious prosecution. Do* fendanta caused plaintiff to be arrested on a oharge of stealing waßh dirt from them at Charles on, near Westport, and tha oharge was dismissed. The plaintiff's case is not yet finished. Timabu, Aogaat 22. An appeal from a deoision of the Resident Magistrate's Court on an information by tha Deputy Commissioner of stamps against the South Canterbury Refrigerating Company was taken. Mr 0. Perry for the appellants, MrG. Harper with him, Mr Watt for the respon. dents. In April last the Company was fintcl £200 for dealing m an illegal foreign policy of marine insurance, and this was an appeal against the oonviotion, the prooeeding being by way of re-hearing of the oise. In April, 1886, the Company were freezing sheep for Mr Max Friedlander, of Ashburton, for ship, ment to London, and on his instructions they effeoted an insuranoe on the shipment against risks m London. A policy was believed ta have been taken out at Lloyds, and on that polioy money was subsequently reoeived by Friedlander. The Company effected the m. suranoe, and took credit m their aooount current with Friedlander for £66 la Bd, tha amount paid their agents as premium. The polioy had never been seen by any officer of the Stamp Department, but there wasevidenoa that the polioy did existi The Company was allowed a rebate 5 per cent on the premium aa a sort of commission. This, according to previous arrangement, was divided between the Company and Friedlander. The law wai intended to prevent foreign insurances, unless the insuring company has a licensed agent m the colony paying a license fee of £200, and the insuranoes are efleoted on polioiea stamped m the colony.
