TITHES.
LoNpopr, August 15. Owing to the lateness of the season many ol the ministerial supporters are absent from London, and Government has experienced some very small majorities. In consequence of this the provisions of the Tithes Bill have been altered, giving a remedy against the
occupier, he m turn being able to recover from the owner. The alteration has brought the Ministry into grave discredit. London, An&nst 17. The Speaker has ruled that the Government changes m the Tithes Bill constitute it a new measure, and it has consequently been withdrawn. Mr C. W. Gray, M.P. for Nalden, an Independent Tory, introduced a new Bill similar to that of the Government measure. It is expected that it will be read a second time and then abandoned, and Government will introduce their Bill again next year. The papers urge that m the meantime very severe punishment should be inflicted on non- ] payers of tithes, who number fifteen thousand, and include the mayors oi nine parishes.
