A SAD END

A verdict of wilful murder against some person unknown was returuod at the inqueat held in Sydney on August 3, on the body of a woraaa which was found floating in one of the lagoons in the Centennial Park on the previous day. It appears that the deceased, whoae name waa Marl* Whitehorn, described herself as a married woman, and said that her husband had lately gone to Brisbane from New Zealand: She had two young ohlldcon, and had been engaged until lately aa a governess ah Surrey Hills. She was addicted to drink, and about a fortnight ago was arrested for drunkenness. Beyond this nothing appears (o be at present known as to tbe movements of tha woman, who was only twenty-nine years old. The body bore marks of violence, principally about the face, as If the deceased had baca struik a heavy blow In the mouth with a fist, end had then fallen and been thrown into the water. Daath was doe to asphyxia from drowning. Mro Whitehorn appears to have had a sid history. She was brought ap in Eagland in comfort and refinement, but her marriage doea not appear to have been happy, and af te? separating /com her hußbund in New Zealand she took to drink. She lost the situations her teaohlng ability asouvad for her, and at last came under tho notice of the police as % drunkard and a vagrant. She had been dlsobarged from prison only about two dayß before her body was found. It is supposed that she had been dead only a few hoars when her corpse was found floating in the water.
