ASHBURTON BOROUGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

An adjourned meeting cf thp Ashburton Boroa^h 3obool Committee was held last zoning. Present: Messrs SJ!oock(Ohalr , o»n), Gideon Soott, Oralghead, Paul, Kneen, Bean ad Portor. INSPECTOR'S RfcPORT, The report of the luapeotor on a recent examination was re»d. Consideration waa leferred till uext meeting. HBADMABTER. The Committee then proceeded to con ■Idet the applications received for the agadmastereihip. Two ware proposed for ■eoommsndatfon, v z,, Messrs Mtyne and Just, and after a lengthy dlecussfon tbo former was selected by four to three, the noting being :— In favor of Mayne, the Chairman, Meaara Oralghead, Bsan and Porter ; (a favor of Just, Messrs Sflott, Paul and Kneen. Ano'her candidate was proposed, bat he was re jo ted by the same proportion of votes. The Chairman congratulated the Oommlttee" on the choloe it had made. He h«d hardly thought the eleotlon would have resulted as it had, because he never did any '* log-rolling," and he did not know how the voting would be oust. Before the voting was taken he did not know what way Mr Bean won'd go ; he *as aware how Mr Oralghead aud Me Porter would cast their vot*s, beoause they had told him. He was glad that Mr Mayne had! been aoleoted, because he was satisfied he was the best man for the position. The Committee had had their piok of a wonderfully good lot of men, and It might be a lifetime before they would get candidates of such standing azaia. THE RECENT OOMMITTBH ELECTION. Mr Scott asked if lodgera were un titled to vote at a meeting of householders for the eleotlon of a Oommlttee. The Chairman said that lodgers were not entitled to vote. Mr Scott laid that m that case the eleotlon of the present Oommlttee was not legal. The Chairman said th*t as stated by him at the last meeting, there were maDy grounds on which the eleotlon might be upset. He thought and hoped, however, that anyone who had the interests of the dlstrlot at heart would not upset the eleotlon, If the present Oommlttee were ousted the Board would probably appoint Commissioners, and the worst Oommlttee was better than a commission. Mr Soott said that he had hoard that some outsiders were going to take steps to upset the election. Mr Ceafghead asked If it was a faot that Mr Soott had stated that if Mr Just were not recommended for the appointment of master he would upiet the election. Mr Soott said that he had made suoh a statement, though not m the words mentioned by Mr Oraighead, He knew vhftre Mr Oralghead got his information from, beoausa It was Mr Porter he had told. Mr Porter denied having mentioned the matter. Mr Soott said that he had only told Mr Porter. The matter then dropped* PDPIL TEACHER. In regard to the appointment of a pupil teacher a sab-Committee was appointed to confer with the headmaster on the subject, BRPAIBS. It was deolded to write to the Board of Education, requesting a visit from the Clerk of Works to laspeot the buildings and mas tar's house and report on repairs necessary. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Paul, Cralghetd and Bean were appointed a Visiting Committee. RKLIQIOrS INSTRUCTION. Mr Knaen proponed and Mr Oralghead seconded " That If requested by the Ash/burton Clergymen the school be closed one day In the week from 12 o'clook to allow them to give biblical instrnotlon from 12 to. 12 30." After some discussion tbe motion was carried, the Chairman and Mr Porter dissecting. MISCELLANEOUS. After transacting routine business the Committee odpnrned.
