ST. STEPHEN'S CONCERT

The concert given last night m 81 Stephen's schoolroom waß In every way anooeufut. The attendance wu good, and many of the items of abova average merit Mr Horaoe Gates' Orchestral P*rty opened the ooncerfc with an exceedingly well played overtone " Btradella. 11 The party consisted of Messrs Fleming and Ward, Ist violins, Mm Ethel Gates and Mr Salek, 2od violins, Miss Ada Gates, pianoforte, Mr Dowell, flate, Mr Baxter cornet, Mr Gates, doable buss and eonduotor. Mr Flem Dg's leading violin was beard with great advantage, and both this overture and a second one were thoroughly enjoyable. We oongratula'e Mr Gates on the yery creditable performance of kis company. Mr Bimmondfgave the wellknow Bocg " The Bay of Bisoay," which was followed by a beautiful rendering by Mrs Denshire of a beautiful song "A Voice that is Still" by Giro Pinsnti, whioh was vehemently redemanded, as was a seoond song whioh Mrs Denshire sang at the dote of the programme. Muoh ioterest was attached to the next item, a pianoforte solo by Miss Traumann, who has recently settled m Asbburton Miss Traoxnaon chose a Polish Dance as her opening piece, and it was played very finely. We venture to say that each pitying has seldom been heard m Asbburton, and the very warm encore whioh greeted both Miss Traumann's selections was unavoidable. Mr Kersel gave a fine rendering of the «• Death of Nelson," and later on sang the time-honored •• Tom Bowling." Mr Fleming's violin performance of "When Other Ups" to the aocompanhntat of Mrs Deathlre wa« a vary good one. It was played on one string of his instrument, as was a second ■010 whioh he played, and showed greet facility of execution, fie received a well deserved enoore. Mr Arthur gave a humorous reading whioh pleased his andlenoe, though, were we inoUned to be eritieel, we might saggest that It a little erred o* the side of length.
